Situated on the Rocky Mountain’s eastern incline, Colorado Springs has an attractive setting and a high-altitude continental climate with sparse precipitation. Since it’s usually sunny and clear, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of endless prairies to the east and majestic mountains to the west.
Colorado Springs was once hailed as a resort city, but it now has an emerging commercial economy and a strong military presence. The latter includes the Space Command and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Numerous software giants, venture capital firms and big data companies conduct business in the Colorado Springs area.
Residents enjoy a low unemployment rate, good wages and many recreational opportunities. Because it experiences no humidity, Colorado Springs has the ideal climate for outdoor enthusiasts. While located in proximity of Vail and Aspen, Colorado Springs lacks the intense traffic and steep costs of living that are normally associated with renowned ski resorts. Groceries, utilities and transportation costs are lower than the national average.
While the median age for homes is 31 years, construction is booming. New homes are springing up near parks, schools and cultural attractions. Properties have appreciated over 5 percent in the last decade, but the median value is quite affordable at around $225,000. This translates to approximately $130 per square foot. Home owners also benefit from property tax rates that are more than 50 percent lower than the national average.
School districts in Colorado Springs consistently rank among the best in the state. Almost 40 percent of the local public schools have GreatSchools ratings of 8 or better. The area is also home to 28 charter schools, seven of which have perfect ratings of 10. Parents can opt to send their children to any of the 31 private schools in Colorado Springs.
Colorado Springs is home to dozens of attractions. It can lay claim to one of the most visited mountains in the world, Pikes Peak, and the only zoo in the country that’s located on a mountain, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. The Garden of the Gods, an unusual park that is home to tall red rock formations, ranks highly with visitors as well. Sports fans will love touring the Olympic training center, which functions as the headquarters of the national shooting and swimming teams.
